My partner and I are looking to vacation this year in your state. Any great hotels (gay friendly)? We are spending two weeks one week of travel and another hopefully renting a cabin for a week; any contacts there?

As a hetero - I have not noticed a lot of open bias here. In the Cedar Rapids area - there is a small gay nightlife - you might want to consider DesMoines (more urban) or the Quad Cities (gambling - great night life on the Illinois side). As far as the cabin - Shimmick park has several for rent. If you would be willing to go a few miles into Illinois - there are a mess of REALLY nice primative cabins at state parks. Reply or contact the Iowa or Illinois DNR for places to rent cabins.

BTW - Friday night in Rock Island (one of the "quad cities), Illinois "the district" (four city blocks) rocks.

Other places that might interest you are:
The Amana colonies (German traditions)
Pella (Dutch traditions)
Decorah (Nordic traditions - my personal choice)
Iowa City is nice - plenty of culture and so forth - very "tolerant" (sorry - not sure of the politically correct term for you won't take a beating for being gay).
